Nimrodel

1.
An Elven-maid there was of old, A shining star by day: Her mantle white was hemmed with gold, Her shoes of silver-grey. A star was bound upon her brows, A light was on her hair As sun upon the golden boughs In Lórien the fair. Her hair was long, her limbs were white, And fair she was and free; And in the wind she went as light As leaf of linden-tree. Beside the falls of Nimrodel, By water clear and cool, Her voice as falling silver fell Into the shining pool. Where now she wanders none can tell, In sunlight or in shade; For lost of yore was Nimrodel And in the mountains strayed. The elven-ship in haven grey Beneath the mountain-lee Awaited her for many a day Beside the roaring sea. A wind by night in Northern lands Arose, and loud it cried, And drove the ship from elven-strands Across the streaming tide. When dawn came dim the land was lost, The mountains sinking grey Beyond the heaving waves that tossed Their plumes of blinding spray. Amroth beheld the fading shore Now low beyond the swell, And cursed the faithless ship that bore Him far from Nimrodel. Of old he was an Elven-king, A lord of tree and glen, When golden were the boughs in spring In fair Lothlórien. From helm to sea they saw him leap, As arrow from the string, And dive into the water deep, As mew upon the wing. The wind was in his flowing hair, The foam about him shone; Afar they saw him strong and fair Go riding like a swan. But from the West has come no word, And on the Hither Shore No tidings Elven-folk have heard Of Amroth evermore.

Thou hast taken the light of many suns, And they are sealed in the prison-house of gloom. Even as candle-flames Hast thou taken the souls of men With winds from out a hollow place; They are hidden the abyss as in a sea, And the gulfs are over them, As the weight of many mountains, As the depth of many seas; Thy shields are between them and the light; They are past its burden and bitterness; The spears of the day shall not touch them, The chains of the sun shall not hale them forth
4.
From dead are the souls Flowing in the fields of slaughter, Return to home, without hope Over the wild dark water.
5.
In western lands beneath the Sun the flowers may rise in Spring, the trees may bud, the waters run, the merry finches sing. Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night and swaying beeches bear the Elven-stars as jewels white amid their branching hair. Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars for ever dwell: I will not say the day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell.
6.
In moorland beneath the sky where flowers rise in the horizons rivers may flow through woodlands In the western, at the mountains high towers rise like one the sound in the mountain wiggle like hammers beating the ground Prearing to recive The Elven King in moorland beneath the sky The Elven King has return
7.
Marked by the priesthood of the Night's misrule, The shadows imprecatory trees Cypress that guarded woodland secrets And graves that waited for the delaying ghoul, Nathless I neared the melancholy pool, By those whose roots were deepest in dead eld. Where the woven boughs were wet and cool As with a mist of poison, I drew near To mark the tired stars peer dimly down Through riven branches from the height of space, And shudder in those waters with quick fear, Where in black deeps the pale moon seemed to drown A haggard girl, with dead, despairing face.
8.
When winter first begins to bite and stones crack in the frosty night, when pools are black and trees are bare, 'tis evil in the Wild to fare.
